Due to the close approach at Washington Pass, it is usually possible to climb the South Arete of South Early Winter Spire. Mountain School is a nationally recognized environmental education program offered by North Cascades Institute in cooperation with North Cascades National Park.

Mountain School students come to the North Cascades with their school class, teacher and chaperones to learn about the ecosystems and natural and cultural history of the mountains. The North Cascade Range is the lower 48's premiere destination for alpine mountaineering.

With over glaciers in an area just over 1, square miles, the North Cascades are the ideal place to develop basic mountaineering skills or to push yourself on.
